Culminating Facebook
January 16, 2007The second web 2.0 site that I researched is called Facebook.
Facebook is a social networking website that allows people to interact with others. They can do this through messages, videos, notes and pictures. On Facebook, you are able to create an online profile about yourself containing such information as your age, name and hometown. You can also put your likes and dislikes on your profile as well. With this information, you can find people who have the same interests as you and you can become friends. Also, if you already have friends, you can add them to a friend’s list where you can talk to them through Facebook as well. Lastly, Facebook is a free website and costs nothing to create a profile.
Facebook works by having people create a profile about themselves. The profile includes such information as your name, your hometown and your city. Along with creating this profile, you can upload a photo of yourself so that other people can see who you are. Next, you can add friends to your Facebook. To do this you just have to find the person you are looking for by searching for them through the search engine. When you find them, you just have to click add to friends and there you go. After you have a friend, you can then go to their Facebook and you can write on their wall. When your friend gets your message, they can write you back and you can both have a conversation through Facebook. You can also create notes and also photos on to Facebook. Your friends can then comment these stories and photos. You can also comment your friend’s photos and notes. Lastly, you can join networks which are groups of people who have a common interest and they talk about it through Facebook. For example, you could join a network that likes a certain movie. After you have joined, you could talk about this movie with the people of this network.
Facebook promotes the idea of communication by allowing the users talk to each other through messages. Facebook promotes the idea of collaboration by allowing people to join networks. This means that they must work together as a community and collaborate with each other as to how the network will work. For example, a network that wants to work together to make a letter that they send to the president urging them to bring back soldiers from over seas, the group members must talk to each to figure out what exactly is said. Facebook promotes the idea of sharing because it allows a person to express their thoughts with no limitations and it also allows a person to express themselves through videos and pictures. Facebook promotes the idea of social networks because it allows a person to actually join a network where they can meet new people and become friends with them.
Facebook may solve such problems as who is going out with whom. This is because in your profile, you can select yourself as in a relationship. You then write your girlfriends or boyfriends name and then people will know. This will stop others from trying to steal your significant other which means there will be no jealous fights. Also, Facebook can help shy people who are afraid to go out and talk to someone in the open. This is because the person can hide behind their Facebook profile and only talk to people through Facebook. Doing this may result in the kid becoming more confident and happy and it may even help him be able to get over his fear and actually talk to someone in real life.
Facebook may cause online bullying. If a person, lets say Johnny, were to make fun of David a lot, then David would not be to happy and this may cause a fight or David may become very depressed by these comments. Also, Facebook would be cause a problem in the safety of its members. For example, if a young child were to put to much information in their profile, then an online predator may be able to get to them. This puts the child in danger which is not a good thing.
I like Facebook because it allows me to express myself and also because most of my friends are on it. With my friends on it, I can talk to them easier and quicker if I have to talk to them about something but it is not important enough to ask over the phone. Also, I like Facebook because I can upload the videos that I make onto the website so people can see my movies. The people who then watch my movies can give me feed back on them and so I can change the movies to make them better with these comments.
Culminating Dodgeball
January 15, 2007The name of the web 2.0 website I am researching is Dodgeball.
Dodgeball is a social networking site that uses a cell phone to help people connect to others. One way Dodgeball does this is by allowing a user to keep track of where his or her friends. For example, Dodgeball allows the user to tell his or her friends where he or she is. To do this, the user must first tell the computer their location, which is called “checking in”. The computer then gives a message to all of the user’s friends which will notify them where that specific user is. The friends can then go to this location and they can meet up with the user. Also, Dodgeball helps people to get into relationships by allowing the user to have a crush list. A crush list is a list of the people that person likes. When a user checks in, the computer will send a message to the user to tell them if a crush is in the area. Also, the crush will receive a message telling them that someone likes them and also where that person is. By supplying this information, the crush is able to choose whether to find the person who likes them or to just ignore them. Dodgeball is free, however standard text messaging rates apply to a person’s phone.
As I mentioned before, Dodgeball works by allowing a user to tell their friends where they are so that their friends can find them. It also allows a person to find where a crush is or where someone who likes the user. However, these are not Dodgeball’s only uses. Dodgeball can also allow a user to talk to their friends by sending out something called a shout. A shout allows a person to message all of their friends about anything they want. To make a shout, all the user has to do is put an exclamation mark before the message they want to send to all of their friends. For example, if a user, lets say his name was John, were to write, “! who wants to go to Tim Hortons?”, the computer would then relay John’s message to the his friends. The message John’s friends would receive would look like this, “John says who wants to go to Tim Hortons?”. Lastly, Dodgeball helps people to find locations of anything from bars to churches. To do this, the user just has to type in ? and the name of the place into their phone and the computer will find it for them.
Sadly, to be able to use Dodgeball, a person must be in select cities of the United States and they must have a cell phone with text messaging services. With this is mind, I think that most teenagers as well as young adults would be the most popular users. However, I believe that if Dodgeball continues to grow, more adults may begin to join up.
Dodgeball promotes the ideas of communication, collaboration, sharing and social networking in many ways. It promotes communication by allowing people to talk to each other through text messages. It promotes the idea of collaboration by allowing people to tell their friends where they are so that they can all meet up. It promotes the idea of sharing by allowing a person to take a picture of theirself as well as creating a profile that shares your personal information. It promotes the idea of social networking by allowing Dodgeball’s users to be able to interact with each other.
There are many problems that Dodgeball would be able to solve. For instance, if Dodgeball is really popular at a school, a person would be able to join it to gain some popularity. This would stop them from being a outcast. Also, Dodgeball can help make people become friends by allowing them to spend more time with each other. This would be possible through the check in ability of Dodgeball which tells a person’s friends where that person is/ This allows them to be able to meet and spend time with each other. Moreover, Dodgeball can help solve the problem of loneliness by letting a person know who has a crush on them which may help people hook up.
However, Dodgeball can also create some problems. For example, if a person did not want a crush to know they liked them, then they would not be very happy if Dodgeball sent out a message to that person’s crush. This could then lead to rejection which might hurt the person’s feelings. Also, if a person, lets say John, did not like a specific person on their friend’s list, lets say Tina, John would not be very happy if, when he checks in, a message was sent to Tina telling her where he is. Tina could then go to that location and her and John could spend time together, something John may not like very much. Lastly, if a person were to check in too often, then the phone bill would go up which might make the person not use Dodgeball that much. This would then make Dodgeball less popular which could lead to Dodgeball being deleted.
I like Dodgeball because I like the idea of a person being able to find their friends so that they can spend time with them. I also like it because it allows you to be able to meet new people. By meeting these new people, you could then meet their friends and this pattern could spread until, and this is very optimistic, the whole world became friends, if Dodgeball covered the whole world though.

What Communication means to me….
November 12, 2006To me, communication is the ability to express ones self through words, pictures, sounds, actions and thoughts. We use communication everyday, whether it be your friend talking to you about what they did last night or a television reporter explaining to you why there is still a war in
Iraq.
Everyone uses communication and everyone can communicate. They don’t even really have to do anything. For example, someone sitting in a corner looking sad says to people around them that this person is experiencing some difficulties in their life.
Without communication, the world would be extremely dull. Everyone would be doing nothing because if you were to do something, like moving your finger up and down, you would be communicating.
In the end, I believe communication is one of the most essential things in the world. It helps shape us into the person we become. If not for communication, I would not be the same the person I was today.
